An attractive smile is always a flattering feature. People who are confident with their smile tend to smile more often, projecting a positive individual with an upbeat attitude. Using modern dental techniques and materials, achieving a beautiful smile is often accomplished in just one or two appointments. And, when performed by a skilled dentist, your results will have a natural look and feel.
Cosmetic dentistry on front teeth most visible in a smile can correct crooked, gapped, broken, uneven and discolored teeth. The application recommended is determined by the extent of correction needed and the location of the tooth. We use porcelain veneers, crowns or bonding – and often a combination of these – for an ideal outcome.
In my recommendations, I discuss advantages and drawbacks of each so, together, we can meet your overall goals.
Ideally, porcelain veneers are the preferred choice for front ‘smiling’ teeth for several reasons.
• Veneers provide exceptional longevity and add durability to teeth.
• A precise shade matching can be achieved with porcelain veneers, which also resist staining.
• Porcelain veneers can be placed with minimum disruption to natural teeth.
• Veneers provide the most natural look and feel possible, even reflecting light as natural teeth.
Crowns, however, have an advantage over veneers when it comes to strength. People who clench or grind their teeth at night create a challenge for veneers (although wearing a night-time mouth guard can help you avoid damaging veneers). Teeth that have extensive fillings or are severely crooked would require porcelain crowns.
Bonding is a less-expensive option for reshaping or repairing minor flaws in teeth. Bonding, however, doesn’t give the luminosity of porcelain, so you sacrifice the ‘ideal’ for a natural appearance. Neither does bonding provide the longevity or strength of porcelain. Yet, when it comes to repairing a chip or adding length to a short tooth, bonding can be a cost-effective option for teeth that will not endure undue pressure.
