Ask The Doctor:
“I hate my partial but I’m afraid anything else will be worse. I even take it out to eat. Is there a better way to replace back teeth?”
ANSWERED BY DR. BAN BARBAT
If you have natural teeth on both sides of where you’re missing teeth, a fixed bridge may be a more appealing option. Held by crowned, natural teeth on each side, a “bridge” of replacement teeth is affixed to adjacent teeth. This disadvantage, however, is crowning teeth that are otherwise healthy.
In some instances, the tooth on each side of the gap can anchor a bridge without crowning natural teeth. This is achieved with the help of brackets attached to the back of the bordering teeth, which are typically not visible.
Dental implants are another option for replacing teeth. Because the implanted portion is held by your jaw, they have the dame foundation as natural teeth and don’t need other teeth for support. After the bone grows around the implant to secure it in place, a replacement tooth (or bridge of several teeth) can be attached.
Other advantages of dental implants include restored ability to chew and enjoy food. Trapped food between the partial and gums is no longer a problem and you will no longer feel something foreign in your mouth.
Another advantage of implants is their longevity. With proper care, dental implants are designed for a lifetime. As with any implant in the body, complications cannot always be foreseen. However, their success rate is higher than any other in-bone implant in the body.
Because dental implants initially cost more than a crown & bridge combination or a partial, some perceive the cost as an obstacle. Yet, when you consider that dental implants never need replacing, do not decay, won’t cause sore spots and restore eating and speaking comfort, the initial investment actually equates to the more economical option over time.
Begin with a Consultation to learn the options best for your needs. This way, you can determine the choice that fits appropriately for your goals.
Tend To Hot Or Cold Sensitivity ASAP!
If hot coffee or ice-cream causes a jolt of discomfort in your mouth, it’s a warning sign that something is wrong. Causes may be:
- Cavity
- Fractured tooth
- Worn filling or enamel
- Receded gums
Tooth sensitivity may be overcome with simple measures. Depending on the cause, recommndations may be:
- Desensitizing toothpaste that can block transmission of pain sensations.
- Fluoride gel to strengthen tooth enamel.
- Crowns, inlays or bonding to repair and protect.
- Gum grafting is advised when gum tissue has receded from the tooth, exposing sensitive root portions.
- Root canals are advised when other options will not eliminate the problem.
Please bring any sensitivity to our immediate attention. Early repair often prevents the need for more extensive treatment in the future.

Arrange Year-End Treatment SOON!
During the holiday season, it’s not unusual for people to have dental treatment to take advantage of unused insurance benefits, have treatment during time off from work or to begin a new year with a healthy, attractive smile.
Even though it’s early October, NOW is the best time to arrange your treatment so your visits can be scheduled according to preferred procedure dates.
Please remember that many treatments take more than one appointment to complete, particularly when a dental lab is involved. Some procedures may encompass two or more weeks before your final results are ready to place.
Our Financial Coordinator can be a valuable support when planning your treatment. Once you’ve approved treatment, you can meet with her so ideal scheduling can be arranged and insurance coverage determined. She’ll also explain payment plans that require no down payment with no interest the first year.
The key is to act SOON! Call 586-739-2155.
