As a General Dentist with advanced training in Neuromuscular Dentistry, I am often referred patients who have a number of problems due to bite misalignment. While crooked or crowded teeth don’t always indicate bite misalignment, they typically indicate problems that will occur, if they don’t already exist.
My training in Neuromuscular Dentistry enables me to determine a ‘true’ bite alignment for each individual’s mouth. Even when a new patient was told previously that their bite was correct, we have the skills and technology to go a level deeper.
A bite can register correctly when teeth come together and ‘meet’ without interferences. However, when crowns are too short, for example, the strain this creates on jaw joints and facial muscles can result in joint and muscle pain, headaches, migraines, chipped or broken teeth and night-time clenching or grinding that causes worn teeth.
Some cases require movement of teeth for the best, long-term result. This can be done, in cases where minimal movement is required, through Invisalign. These clear molds are removable for eating and brushing but can move teeth at a pace faster than traditional braces.
In other cases, orthodontic treatment is necessary. Although wires and brackets have a less-than-fun reputation, today’s materials are more comfortable and can be barely visible.
When we provide crowns, crown-&-bridge combinations, veneers, dental implants, dentures or partials, our goal is to incorporate a bite alignment that goes beyond teeth that merely meet. Whatever the procedure, we want your smile’s foundation to be a bite that works in unison with head muscles and jaw joints. This provides you with a smile that minimizes the risk for future problems.
