At our Shelby Twp dental office, we take much pride in providing exceptional care for smiles of all ages. While we see the health and well-being of every smile as of utmost importance, our entire team is also committed to out-of-office ways that support the well-being of our community, as a whole.
Like any community, we understand the immense importance of the education and betterment of our youth. Our Macomb County dental office has made support along these lines an ongoing commitment. This is why, 21 years ago, we began awarding scholarships to high school seniors seeking to pursue healthcare careers.
After meeting and interviewing many impressive high school seniors, I’m pleased to introduce the two 2023 BAN R. BARBAT, DDS-PC SCHOLARSHIP winners:
KIERA CURRAN – is a Utica High School graduate who will begin pre-medical studies this fall at Michigan State University’s Lyman Briggs College, which admits only 600 students each year. Her goal is to become a radiologist. While at Utica High, she was active in a number of organizations and served as captain of the dance team.
CARTER RODZIK – is an Eisenhower High School graduate, having ranked 8th in his class. He served as Eisenhower’s National Honor Society chapter president and was a member of the cross-country and track teams. He will be attending Michigan Technological University this fall to begin studies in biomechanical engineering.
While it’s always difficult to narrow down to final selections, it is wonderful to know that the future of medicine is the priority of such capable and determined hands.
As a dentist, I remember my undergraduate and dental school years, always being aware of a dark cloud of financial needs hovering overhead. This is why “giving back” to our community, and in higher education, has been especially important. However, we are proud to support the community in ways that touch almost every age as well.
Throughout the years, we have been multi-event and team sponsors through the Shelby Township Parks & Recreation Department. Too, many of our staff members are actively involved in volunteer roles in schools, churches, civic and charitable organizations, and willingly lend a hand wherever they can.
As your Shelby Township dental office, we feel it is also important to educate our patients on the whole-health benefits of good oral health. We want patients to know how and why having a healthy smile supports overall health. Research has shown that the bacteria in the mouth plays an instrumental role in our immune system, gut health and systemic health. Studies have also shown links between oral bacteria of gum disease to serious health problems, including some cancers, heart disease, stroke, arthritis, and more – including Alzheimer’s disease.
It was an honor to present these two impressive students with their scholarships. And, it is a joy to all on our team to be a part of healthy smiles in Macomb and Oakland County!
